Overview

Blackboard supports only full-featured browsers. Some Internet service providers issue 'customized' versions of Internet Explorer (IE) or Netscape. These are not compatible with Blackboard. It is important to ensure you are using a supported browser and that your browser settings are correct so the complete functionality of Blackboard is available to you.

If you are having trouble using Blackboard, there may be a problem with your browser or other software on your computer. The tutorials provided below offer "How To" help covering various troubleshooting techniques that have been used successfully in the past to fix isolated problems experienced with Blackboard.

Java: Uninstall/Reinstall Newest, Clear Cache

TOP

If you are running into Certificate Error problems or Generic Exception Error problems when opening a document in Blackboard or if you are experiencing problems with Blackboard's Java-related tools such as the HTML Editor or Chat/Whiteboard tool, you may have a problem with your installation of the Java browser plug-in. It is very important to have the current version of Java installed and enabled as it required for Blackboard to function properly. Additionally, even if you have the current version installed, older versions that still exist on your machine may cause problems with Java's functionality until they are uninstalled.

Windows Vista Users: The version of Java that comes with the Vista operating system is problematic for Blackboard. If you are using Vista, we recommend that you uninstall all versions of Java and then reinstall the latest version of Java available from the Web.

Clear Web Browser Cache

TOP
Web browsers download thousands of files associated with the Web pages you look at every day. These files are stored locally so that the next time you visit a Web page, it loads much quicker—because it's already on your computer. These cached files are not necessary and can bog your computer down if not cleared periodically. Below are instructions for clearing the cache in the following Web browsers:
  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click on the Tools menu
  • Select Internet Options

  • Under the General tab, under Browsing history, click the Delete... button

  • To clear all Private Data, press the Delete all... button

Some users have found that increasing the browsers available cache size has help improve their blackboard experience.

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click on the Tools menu
  • Select Internet Options
  • In the General tab, under Browsing history, select Settings

  • Adjust the Disk Space size up or down as needed
  • Press Ok

  • Open Firefox
  • Click on the Tools menu
  • Select Clear Private Data...

  • Check the boxes next to Cache, Cookies, etc.
  • Click the Clear Private Data Now button

  • Open Safari
  • Click on the Safari menu (PC version: click on the Edit menu)
  • Select Empty Cache...

  • Press the Empty button
