In Windows XP, the default behavior for Internet Explorer is to open Microsoft documents (doc, docx, ppt, pptx, xls, xlsx, etc.) automatically. This can be troublesome when all you want to do is save the document to your local computer. You may set your computer to not open Microsoft documents by default, but rather to ask you if you want to open or save the file.

  • Open My Computer (aka Windows Explorer)
  • Select the Tools menu
  • Choose Folder Options...

  • Go the File Types tab
  • Scroll down and select the file type you want to open
For example: Word documents have an extension DOC/DOCX. PowerPoint documents have an extension of PPT/PPTX. Excel documents have an extension of XLS/XLSX.
  • Press the Advanced button

  • Uncheck the Browse in Same Window box
  • Press OK on the Edit File Type window
  • And OK again on the Folder options window
