Overview

Blackboard allows instructors to import and export grades from Blackboard. This gives an individual the ability to maintain a course grade book externally from Blackboard using Microsoft Excel or some other spreadsheet program. The external spreadsheet must be formatted in a specific way. The easiest way to insure your spreadsheet is setup correctly is to Download the Blackboard Roster into a Spreadsheet. Once the spreadsheet has been setup, you may add additional columns and perform calculations as needed. Throughout the semester, update the Grades displayed in Blackboard by Uploading the Spreadsheet Grades into Blackboard. Any new columns created by the upload process must be set as Gradable and be Released to be viewable by your students from the My Grades tool.

NOTE: If you wish to import grades derived from the Scantron machine located in the Moscow Campus Education Building, Room 208, please go to How to Import Scantron Grades for further assistance.

Transfer Grades to/from a Spreadsheet

Blackboard allows instructors to import and export grades from Blackboard into Microsoft Excel or some other spreadsheet program. The external spreadsheet must be formatted in a specific way to import successfully into Blackboard.

The easiest way to setup your spreadsheet initially so that it is in a format compatible with Blackboard is to Download Blackboard Roster into Spreadsheet. This will automatically setup the spreadsheet correctly with column titles in row one and student names and User IDs in rows two and beyond. Once the spreadsheet has been setup, you may add additional columns and perform calculations as needed as long as you maintain row one as the column title row and retain the student User ID column. When you are ready to distribute the data kept in your spreadsheet to your students via Blackboard, simply Upload Spreadsheet Grades into Blackboard.

Format for Blackboard compatible spreadsheet:

  • Row one must contain a valid title for each column
  • Rows two and beyond must contain student data; one student per row
  • The Blackboard User ID field containing the myUIdaho account is critical and must be included for each student

The My Grades tool allows students to see their own grades online without seeing the grades of other students. Complete the following steps to successfully to use Blackboard to deliver grades throughout the semester to your students.

  1. Download Blackboard Roster into Spreadsheet
  2. Upload Spreadsheet Grades into Blackboard
  3. Release Imported Grades to Bb Students
