Overview

Your student's Section Number, Student ID, and preferred Email Address information do not automatically show up in the Blackboard grade book. This is a change from the student data displayed in WebCT. This student information can be very useful, however, and thus you may wish to import it into your Blackboard grade book. If you have multiple sections in a single course, you may find it convenient to be able to sort your students by section. You may also wish to merge uploaded grades calculated by the Scantron machine into the Blackboard grade book. You must have access to your student's Student ID numbers to do this.

Export Class List from Course Roster Tool

The following steps show you how to Export the Course Roster List from the the Course Roster Tool. The Course Roster Tool collects its information from Vandal Web.

  • Go to Blackboard and log in.
  • Once in the My UI area, look under the Campus Bookmarks heading and click on Course Roster Tools.

  • Sign in with your Blackboard/Novell username and password.
  • You will see information about FERPA. Please read this carefully, and press I agree.

  • Click the Select button next to the Course Title of the appropriate Blackboard course in which you have added your students to.
     
    Note: If you have not enrolled your students into Blackboard yet, you will need to do that first. Please see the Enrollment Tutorial.

  • Click on Manage Members tab to see a detailed list of students that will be added to the course.
     
    Note: If your class roster is large, this screen may take a long time to load.

  • Press the Export button to save a file called export_class.txt. This is a text tab-separated spreadsheet containing all the members enrolled in your course.

  • When the File Download dialog box appears, press the Save button. Store the file in a location that is easy for you to locate in the next step.

  • Close the Course Roster Tool and return to the Blackboard My UI page.

Import Class List into Blackboard Grade Book

  • Go to the Blackboard My UI page and click on the course that you want to add these columns to.

  • Go to the Teach tab, and click on the Grade Book tool.

  • Click on the Import from Spreadsheet button.

  • Click the Browse... button to locate the export_class.txt file you download in the step above.
  • Ensure that the separator is set to Tab.
  • Press the Upload button.

  • Accept the default settings to bring in all the new columns or selectively choose which columns to import.
  • Press the Import button.

  • Press OK to accept any columns that were not imported.

  • View the new columns by clicking on the Members tab, View All tab, or Custom View tab.

Note: You may have to scroll to the right to see the new columns.
