Turning Point Clicker Integration

Overview

Blackboard and Turning Technologies have partnered to create an integration tool that allows students to enter their Clicker ID numbers into your Blackboard course site. Instructors can use the Turning Point 2008 software to download the class participant list. Finally, if you use TurningPoint to assign grades during class presentations, you can upload this numeric data back to the Blackboard grade book and send results to students. This integration ONLY applies to TurningPoint clickers and Blackboard.

Note: The ITS Computer Classrooms are schedule to move to TurningPoint 2008 in January. It is recommended that after the end of the Fall 2007 semester, you upgrade your version to TurningPoint 2008. This involves working with TurningPoint to get a new license number and in some cases getting a newer model receiver. Please contact support@turningtechnologies.com if you have not been notified of your 2008 upgrade code.


Activate Clicker Registration

  • Login to your Blackboard course
  • Under the Build Tab, click on the Add Content Link button
  • Select Turning Clicker Integration

  • Choose Create Turning Clicker Integration

  • Give the Integration Page a title such as "Register Your Clicker"
  • Click Save

  • The Clicker Integration Page is now added to your Blackboard Course Content page
  • You may also add this link to a Learning Module in much the same fashion
  • Note: This functionally will not work with the built-in Student View demonstration student. Attempting to add a clicker ID as the Demo Student will result in an error.

Download Participant List

The step above allows you to collect your students' Clicker IDs. In order to see your students' names associated with their clicker IDs inside the PowerPoint TurningPoint application, you must download the participant list. You must also already have the TurningPoint 2008 software installed on the machine where you will be building your PowerPoint Presentation. You may download the software from http://www.turningtechnologies.com/ (click on Download TurningPoint)

  • Open TurningPoint 2008 which will automatically open Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Select the tab TurningPoint 2008
  • Select the Tools button
  • Select WebCT Wizards, then Campus Edition 6.0/Vista 3,4

    Note: TurningPoint still refers to the Blackboard Product as WebCT

Import List

  • Choose Import Participant Lists
  • Click Next

Import List

  • Type the server name www.blackboard.uidaho.edu
  • Enter the User Name and Password which are the same as your Blackboard account
  • Select the checkbox Using Server-Wide SSL
  • Click Next

Connect to Server

  • Choose the Institution University of Idaho (the only option) and then Next.

  • Select the checkbox next to the Course participant list you wish to download.
  • Click Finish.
  • NOTE: If you receive an error message, you may need an updated TurningPoint 2008 system file. Contact David Schlater at davids@uidaho.edu for help.

Choose Section

  • Use the Save As dialogue box to save your Participant List to the default location:
    My Documents/TurningPoint 2008/Participants.
  • Click Save.

    Save List

  • Select the list associated with the course you're working on.
  • Press the Use Selected List button.
    • If, for some reason, the list is not available, use the Import a List button to bring it in.

  • You can now view your class participants by selecting Participants.
  • Select Display Participant Monitor.

  • The results of your clicker session displays with various questions and student responses.


Upload Clicker Results

If you have awarded points for questions during your TurningPoint PowerPoint class session, you may upload data back to the Blackboard grade book so your students can view the results.

  • Select the tab TurningPoint 2008.
  • Select the Tools button.
  • Select WebCT Wizards, then Campus Edition 6.0/Vista 3,4.

    Note: TurningPoint still refers to the Blackboard Product as WebCT.

Choose Campus Edition 6

  • Choose Export Student Data.
  • Click Next.

Export Student Data

  • Type the server name www.blackboard.uidaho.edu.
  • The User Name and Password are the same as your Blackboard account.
  • Select the checkbox Using Server-Wide SSL.
  • Click Next.

Input Server Information

  • Choose the Institution University of Idaho (the only option) and then Next.

  • Highlight the Course to Export data into.
  • Click Next.

Choose Section

  • Highlight Current Session or choose a saved session's data to export.
  • Click Next.

Choose Session Data

  • Select the Add Grades checkbox.
  • Type a Title for the Column Header for the grade book.
  • Type in the Maximum Value in points for the session.
  • You may choose to email Individualized Reports to students if you have included the Mail tool inside Blackboard and have email turned on. This allows students to see the correct answers to questions along with their responses.
  • Click Finish.

Export Data

To view the results inside your Blackboard course:

  • Login to Blackboard and click on your course.
  • Click on the Teach tab.
  • Click on the Grade Book tool.
  • The Grade Book column for the Clicker results will look similar to the data highlighted below.


Student View

Your students can receive their grades from the Clicker results in their Blackboard My Grades area.

  • Your students will login to Blackboard and go to the My Grades tool.
  • Below is a sample Grade book for a student.


     

  • You may choose to email Individualized Reports to students if you have included the Mail tool inside Blackboard and have email turned on. This allows students to see the correct answers to questions along with their responses. They will see a message with the subject of TurningPoint Results.
