How do students complete an assignment?

Return

Overview

The assignments tool allows your students to submit assignments electronically, via either entering text into the submission box, or attaching a file. The assignments tool provides a single location for assignment submittals and displays the scores for these assignments once they have been graded.

Session Timeout
WARNING: Blackboard sessions timeout after 30 minutes of inactivity. Web Browsers DO NOT register typing as activity. If you're typing an assignment, assessment, or discussion submission for longer than 30 minutes, the session may timeout when the submit button is pressed. This means that you may lose your work.

TIP: To prevent lost work, create your content in a word processor,
and then copy & paste the content into Blackboard.

Student View Tab

The Student View tab allows you to see and interact with Blackboard exactly as your students do. Blackboard provides each course with a Demo Student Account for testing. This demo account is used when you take quizzes and submit assignments while in the Student View tab. In the student view, you are able to see exactly what your students see including the My Grades area. Use the Student View tab whenever you have a question about how your students will view and work in your Blackboard course.

  • To preview a Web Page as the students will see it, click on the Student View tab.

It's always a good idea to double check that your submission was uploaded correctly.

  • When you've successfully submitted an assignment, you will see a Confirmation screen similar to the one below:

  • Go to Assignments
  • Click on the Submitted tab
  • Click on the Assignment you just submitted

  • Check under Submission to see that you text and/or file attachment has been submitted correctly.
  • Click on the Attachment to make sure you can successfully save and/or open the file (this will help ensure that the person grading the assignment will be able to do the same).

Publish Submissions (Optional)

TOP

Instructors have the option of allowing their students to Publish their assignment results to the Published tab which is a public area where all the students in a course may see the assignment submission of their classmates. The Assignment Grade and the Instructor comments for the published assignment submission are not viewable by other students, but the submission itself is viewable. An assignment must be submitted first, before it can be published.

  • To publish your submission, go to the assignment in either the Submitted tab, or the Graded tab
  • Click on the ActionLinks ActionLinks icon icon next to the assignment
  • Select Publish Controls
Note: If you do not see this option, your instructor has not turned on this feature.

  • Press the Publish button

  • You should now see your published assignment submission listed under the Published tab
