Assessment Setup with Blackboard

Return

Overview

The Assessment tool provides the ability to have students take quizzes, surveys and self tests online. If multiple choice questions are used, the tool can grade the assessment immediately and display the final quiz score, providing instant feedback to a student.

For help adding the Assessment tool to your course, see Adding a New Tool.

EFFICIENCY TIP: If you intend to build an extensive amount of assessments, you may find the use of a Assessment Manager such as Respondus much faster than manually building each question in Blackboard. Learn more about Assessment setup with Respondus.

CAUTION: Be sure to consider the Assessment Hazards associated with online testing before pursuing this method of assessing your students knowledge.

Create Questions

TOP
  • Under the Build Tab, go to Assessments.
  • Create quiz questions by clicking on Go to Question Database button on the Assessments Tool page.

  • Categories are useful in helping you organize your questions. They provide the same function as a folder. To make a new category, click on Create Category. Questions may be moved from one category to another at any time by checking the box to the left of the question, then selecting the category to move the question to at the bottom of the screen, and finally pressing the Go go button.
  • To make a new question, click on Create Questions and select your type of question (multiple choice, matching, calculated, short answer, paragraph, etc).

  • Type in the question title, question text, and optional answers.
    WARNING: Avoid using special characters ( @ # % & ; ) in filenames and titles.
Session Timeout
WARNING: Blackboard sessions timeout after 30 minutes of inactivity. Web Browsers DO NOT register typing as activity. If you're typing an assignment, assessment, or discussion submission for longer than 30 minutes, the session may timeout when the submit button is pressed. This means that you may lose your work.

TIP: To prevent lost work, create your content in a word processor,
and then copy & paste the content into Blackboard.

  • Select the correct answer using the checkbox.
  • Select Yes for Random Order Answering for each question (unless you have an answer like “all of the above”). This will display the answers to the students in random order and make each quiz unique.
  • Click Save.

  • OPTIONAL: Not sure whether you need One Answer or Multiple Answers with Cumulative or All or Nothing scoring? See Question Setup notes for details on these options.

Create an Assessment

TOP
  • Under the Build Tab, click on Assessments
  • Click Create Assessment

  • Fill in the necessary information about the quiz, survey, or self-test

    Suggested Title Format
It is best to name your titles such that they appear in chronological order (i.e. 01 title, 02 title, 03 title...) when they are displayed alphabetically. Although it is possible to define the order in which items are displayed, a problem in Blackboard causes all defined sorting to revert to an alphabetical order whenever the Web Links tool is entered during session.
  • Click the Save button

Add Questions to Assessment

TOP
  • Click on the Title of the Assessment to add questions
  • Random Question Order
To add questions to your quiz and deliver them to each student in a randomized order, click Add to Assessment and select Question Set. Additionally, if you provide a larger pool of questions in the set than will be used to generate the quiz, Blackboard will select a unique random set of questions from that pool for each student. For example, you could have a pool of 50 questions and have Blackboard select a random set of 25 of those questions to deliver in random order to student A. Student B would receive a different set of 25 questions from the pool of 50 and would also receive them in random order during the quiz. Etc.
  • Specify Question Order
If you prefer to deliver the questions in a specific order instead of having them given in a random order, click Add to Assessment and select Existing Questions.

CAUTION: If you deliver a single question, such as an essay, we have found students to be confused, and forget to press the Save button because there is only one question. So they end up submitting a blank submission. Our recommendation is to use the Assignment Drop Box for this type of task.

  • Click the expand button next to the category containing the questions you wish to add to the question set

  • Click the Check Box in the upper left-hand corner to select all of the questions listed on the screen with one click. Fine tune your selection by unchecking boxes next to questions you do not want to include in the question set and checking boxes next to additional questions you wish to include.
  • Click Add Selected

  • Select the Number of Questions to use out of the question set. If you provide a larger pool of questions in the set than will be used to generate the quiz, Blackboard will select a unique random set of questions from that pool for each student. If you wish to select all of the questions in the set, select the maximum number available.
  • Fill in the Points per question
  • Click Update total

  • Add additional questions to the question set at a later time by selecting the checkbox next to the appropriate question set and pressing Add Question Alternatives.
  • Select questions you wish to remove from the question set at any time by checking the box(es) to the left of the question(s) and then selecting the Remove button.
  • If you do alter the number of questions in the question set, be sure to adjust the Number of Questions if needed.

Set Availability

TOP

There are a number of settings available to allow you control of when and how your students see their assessments and the results. See the Selective Release tutorial if you need to release an assessment based on another criteria such as a specific student or group of people.

  • Under the Build Tab, click on Assessments
  • Click on the ActionLinks ActionLinks icon icon next to the quiz you want to setup
  • NOTE: If you do not see the Assessment you are looking for, it may be displayed on the next page. At the bottom of the window, you will find Next Page Next Page and Previous Page Previous Page icons you can use to navigate through the list of Assessments.
  • Select Edit Properties

  • Determine how you want the quiz to function by selecting the appropriate options for your needs.
    • Question delivery
Choose to deliver the assessment questions all at once or one at a time.
CAUTION: We RECOMMEND selecting the Deliver questions all at once option under Question Delivery. If you select Deliver questions one at a time instead, this delivery method may cause as much as 10-12 second delays from one question to the next—causing additional stress to the students taking the assessment.
    • Duration
This is optional, and should take into account technical problems that the student might face.
NOTE: You may allow soft and hard limits on timed assessments. If you check the box to Disallow answer submissions if time has expired, your students will be able to submit their assessment, but not save any further answers. If you don't check the box, then the time runs out, and the student sees that the time has expired, but it still allows them to continue with the assessment.
    • Attempts
Set the number of times a student can take this quiz.
NOTE: If you allow multiple attempts, you may want to check the box to "Randomize questions in a question set for each attempt" to ensure that each quiz attempt is unique.
    • Student Score
Select the first option to release the grades once the student takes the quiz.
Note: Students must press the "View Submission" option to see their results.
    • Dates Available
Set the start and stop date and time.
    • Results Properties
If you would like to give your students all of their quiz feedback and results, keep the default setting. If you would like to show only whether they got the question right or wrong without showing the correct answer, check a) i).
  • Click Save
