Overview

Most Assessment (Quiz) question types can be graded automatically by Blackboard. Paragraph questions must be read and graded by the instructor or teaching assistant.

Automatic Grading

TOP

Assessments, except those containing paragraph questions, are graded automatically after students submit their answers. If the assessment contains paragraph questions, you must evaluate and grade those questions manually. There are a number methods for accessing the student results of an assessment. The directions below describe the most direct route.

  • Under the Teach Tab, go to the Assessments
  • Click the ActionLinks ActionLinks icon icon next to the assessment you wish to review
  • Select View Submissions

  • NOTE: If you do not see the Assessment you are looking for, it may be displayed on the next page. At the bottom of the window, you will find Next Page Next Page and Previous Page Previous Page icons you can use to navigate through the list of Assessments.
Can't find what you're looking for?
There are several possibilities:
  • Are you in the correct Tab (Build, Teach, Graded, Submitted, etc.)?
  • Is it on the next page? Permanently increase the default number of items displayed per screen by modifying your global Bb's Paging Preference.
  • Select the All tab
  • The status of all your students is available in this view
    • Not Submitted indicates the student has NOT started the assessment.
    • In Progress indicates that the student has started, but has not finished the assessment.
    • Partially Graded or Not Graded indicates that the student has finished the assessment, but there are paragraph questions which must be manually graded.
    • Graded indicates that either the submission has been automatically graded, and any paragraph questions have already been manually graded

Manual Grading

TOP

An Assessment Submission Status of Not graded or Partially Graded indicates that the student took a quiz that contains a paragraph question which cannot be automatically graded by Blackboard. The submission must be manually graded by the instructor or teaching assistant. Blackboard will not grade these questions even if they are assigned zero points. Note: This is a change from WebCT. Any quiz with a paragraph question will remain ungraded until the instructor goes in and assigns a score for each paragraph question.

You have the option of grading by Student, which allows you to grade the entire assessment from each Student, or you can grade all of the submissions for a single question. Both methods are described below.
