Disability Accommodation for DSS Students

Return

Overview

The Blackboard assessment tool provides the ability to administer quizzes/exams online. With some additional effort on your part, it can be setup to allow DSS students extra time when taking their quizzes (see Option 1). The available alternatives are to deliver the quiz on paper using a proctor (see Option 2) or to remove the time restriction from the quiz (see Option 3).

Option 1 allows you to lengthen the time allowed to take a quiz to accommodate Disability Support Services (DSS) student requirements. It involves creating two versions of a quiz—each with a different time allowed. Students belonging to the course DSS Group take one version of the quiz and the rest of the class takes the other version. There is quite a bit of overhead in getting this all set up, but once done, the basic structure can be used from semester to semester.

NOTE: Because each quiz is duplicated, extra care needs to be given when modifying a quiz. Any change made needs to be done to both quizzes (the standard and the DSS versions).

Option 2 avoids the overhead required in Option 1. However, it does require that a DSS student meet with the instructor, Disability Support Services, or another acceptable proctor for each quiz/exam given throughout the semester.

Option 3 avoids the overhead required in Option 1 and the inconvenience and expense of Option 2. However, this is only an option when the time restriction is not a requirement for the quiz.

Option 1 - Deliver through Blackboard

TOP
The most common request for quiz accommodation is to lengthen the time allowed to take a quiz. This only applies to quizzes that are timed. You may choose not to time the quiz.

See the Adding a New Tool tutorial for help on adding the Assessment tool to your course.

1. Create Standard Quiz

  • Click on Assessments under the Course Tools menu.
  • Create a standard quiz which will be used as the primary quiz for your students.

NOTE: Because each quiz is duplicated, extra care needs to be given when modifying a quiz. Any change made needs to be done to both quizzes (the standard and the DSS versions).

See the Setting Up an Assessment tutorial for help on this.

2. Duplicate Standard Quiz

After a student and/or Disability Support Services (DSS) has contacted the instructor about a need to lengthen the time for a timed assessment, duplicate the assessment that needs to be customized and set it conditionally for that specific student. Here's how:

  • Inside the Assessment tool, click Create Assessment.
  • Name the new quiz something like DSS-Quiz01.
  • Select Base on an existing assessment
  • Use the pulldown to select the assessment you want to duplicate.
  • Press the Save button.

3. Add Students to DSS Group

Build a group to identify the DSS students in your class. Be sure to modify the student membership of this group each semester, as appropriate.

  • Create a Custom Group called DSS Group.
  • Edit the DSS Group to add your DSS students to it as members.

See the Group Manager tutorial for help on this.

4. Modify Quiz Settings

Modify the quiz selective release settings so that only the appropriate students can see and take each version.

  • Edit the properties of the DSS Quiz to allow for extended time.
  • Set the Selective Release criteria for each quiz as outlined below.
    • Standard Quiz: allow ALL BUT group members of DSS Group access
    • DSS Quiz: allow ONLY group members of DSS Group access

See the Selective Release tutorial for help on this.

5. Setup Grade Book

Quiz columns of [DSSQuiz01] and [Quiz01] must be released to your students if you wish to allow them access to their quiz results.

See the Releasing Grades tutorial for help on this.

NOTE: Although students will only see one version of the each quiz in the Assessments tool—the versions with the appropriate time limit for them, they will see both scores listed in the grade book tool—one for the standard version of the quiz and one for the DSS version. It is not possible to hide one of the versions from your students without also hiding their quiz results. Please convey to your students that they will see columns in the grade book for both a standard version of the quiz and a DSS version.

6. Check Your Work

It is always a good idea to check your work after completing a setup as complicated as the one outlined above. The best way to verify a correct setup is to use your test student provided by Blackboard named Demo Student to verify that all conditions outlined above are being met. Use it to verify the settings for the standard group first and then add the Demo Student to the DSS group to test the settings for that group.

Verify Standard Student View

By default, the Demo Student will not be part of the DSS Group and should be given the standard quiz.

  • View Assessments in the Student View tab. Verify that the standard quiz is visible and the DSS quiz is not.
  • View My Grades in the Student View tab. Verify that both the standard and DSS quiz displays.
Verify DSS Student View

Edit the DSS Group and add the Demo Student to it. The Demo Student should now be given the DSS quiz.

See the Group Manager tutorial for help on this.

  • View Assessments in the Student View tab. Verify that the DSS quiz is visible and the standard quiz is not.
  • View My Grades in the Student View tab. Verify that both the standard and DSS quiz displays.

Option 2 - Deliver on Paper

TOP

Another option for allowing faculty to accommodate students that need a custom quizzing environment is to deliver the quiz on paper. This requires that the student would either meet with the instructor, Disability Support Services, or another acceptable proctor that is agreed upon by the student and instructor.

For students who take their exams outside of Blackboard, you may still deliver their grades to them through Blackboard.

See the Modify/Override Grades tutorial for help on this.

Option 3 - Deliver Quizzes with No Time Limit

TOP

Another option for allowing faculty to accommodate students needing a longer time to complete their quiz is to remove the time restriction for the quiz. However, this is only an option when the time restriction is not a requirement for the quiz.
